Infrared radiation generated by quasi-phase-matched difference-frequency mixing in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide

We report quasi-phase-matched difference-frequency generation of 2.1 pm radiation at room temperature using the & nonlinear coefficient in a periodically poled lithium niobate channel waveguide. A tunable Ti:A1203 laser (ilzO.8 ,um) and a Nd:YAG laser (I = 1.32 pm) were the pump and signal sources, respectively. With 160 mW of 0.81 pm and 1 mW of 1.32 pm radiation coupled into the waveguide, 1.8 PW of 2.1 pm radiation was generated, tunable over a 6 nm bandwidth. We also show that the annealed proton exchange process can change the shape of ferroelectric domains in lithium niobate.

Mid-infrared radiation near 2.8 mum was generated by difference-frequency generation in an 80-mm-long periodically poled Ti:LiNbO(3) channel waveguide by pump radiation near 1.55 mum (tunable external-cavity laser) and a signal radiation of 3.391 mum (HeNe laser). We obtained a normalized conversion efficiency of 105% W(-1) , which is to our knowledge the highest value ever reported.
